Bulk Billing Eligibility

Although we charge for consults, we can provide referrals for bulk-billed services including Mental Health Care Plans.
In January 2027, we will also be offering bulk-billed urgent care consultations that are out of hours or on weekends.
This will be for urgent conditions only, not routine care or repeat prescriptions.
See if you are eligible for after hours bulk billing below.

Urgent consults are on the proviso the patient has a valid Medicare card and the consultation is deemed urgent. These hours include

Weekdays 6pm to 7.20am
Saturdays Midnight to 7.30am then noon onwards
Sundays and public holidays 24/7.
What is considered an “urgent” after hours issue that may be bulk-billed?
1. Common “Urgent” Scenarios
While the GP makes the final call, the following are standard examples of conditions that qualify for an urgent after-hours consult:

Paediatric Concerns

  • Sudden high fever in an infant or young child.
  • Croup (barking cough) or sudden respiratory stridor.
  • Persistent vomiting leading to dehydration risk.

Acute Infections

  • Severe ear infections (otitis media) causing intense pain.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) with significant discomfort or stinging.
  • Rapidly spreading skin redness or “tracking” (signs of cellulitis).

Acute Pain or Injury

  • Severe migraines that are not responding to over-the-counter medication.
  • Possible minor fractures or sprains requiring immediate management advice.
  • Recent wounds that may need cleaning or antibiotics but aren’t life-threatening.

Allergic Reactions

  • Sudden hives or rashes where the patient is uncomfortable but not yet in anaphylaxis.
What is NOT considered urgent and therefore not eligible for after-hours bulk-billing?

A condition is generally not considered urgent if it is for:

  • Routine prescription repeats (e.g., your standard blood pressure meds).
  • Chronic disease reviews (e.g. a monthly diabetes check-up).
  • Non-acute mental health concerns that have been ongoing for weeks.
  • Getting a medical certificate for a minor cold that started three days ago.
  • Referrals for non-urgent specialist appointments.
Summary checklist for urgent Billing
To legally bill an “Urgent” item, the following three things must be true of your consult

Clinical Need:
The doctor believes waiting until morning would cause the patient’s health to worsen.

Timing:
The patient must request the appointment during the after-hours period (you cannot pre-book an “urgent” slot during the day).

Documentation:
The medical notes must specifically state why the assessment was urgent.
