What is a pathology request?
A pathology request is a form issued by your doctor that authorises you to have blood tests, urine tests, swabs, or other diagnostic samples collected and analysed at an accredited pathology laboratory. Your GP uses the results to investigate symptoms, monitor existing conditions, or check that a current treatment is working as it should.
Can an online GP issue a pathology request?
Yes. Our doctors can issue pathology requests during a telehealth consultation in exactly the same way as an in-person GP.
Following your consultation, your request is sent to you electronically. You can take it to any accredited pathology collection centre including major providers with locations across Australia at a time that suits you.
Do I need an appointment specifically for a pathology request?
Not always. If you are booking a consultation for a specific concern and your doctor determines blood tests or other investigations are warranted, the request will be issued as part of that consultation. If you already know you need a pathology request for example, for a routine annual health check or to monitor an ongoing condition you can book a consultation for that purpose.
Will my pathology tests be covered by Medicare?
Most standard pathology tests ordered by a GP are covered by Medicare for patients with a valid Medicare card.
Depending on the tests ordered, a gap fee may apply at the collection centre.
Your doctor will discuss what is being requested and why during your consultation.
How do I receive my results?
Your results are sent directly to your treating doctor. We will contact you to discuss your results and any recommended next steps. If anything requires urgent attention, we will reach out to you promptly.
Our doctors are registered with AHPRA and practise in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia’s Good Medical Practice guidelines. Pathology requests are issued at the clinical discretion of the treating practitioner.
