Specialist Referrals

Home E Specialist Referrals
Can an online GP provide a specialist referral?

Yes. Our GPs are registered with AHPRA and can issue specialist referrals following a real-time telehealth consultation, in exactly the same way as an in-person GP.
A referral will be provided where your doctor determines it is clinically appropriate based on your symptoms, history and health needs.

What specialists can your doctors refer me to?

Our GPs can refer you to the full range of medical specialists available in Australia, including cardiologists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, gynaecologists, neurologists, oncologists, ophthalmologists, orthopaedic surgeons, paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, rheumatologists and urologists, among others.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist?
For most specialists in Australia, a valid GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates on your specialist appointment. Without a referral you can still see a specialist privately, however you will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Our GPs will ensure your referral includes all clinically relevant information to support your specialist consultation.
How long does a specialist referral last?
A standard GP referral to a specialist is valid for twelve months from the date you see the specialist, not the date it is issued by our GP.
Referrals to the same specialist for an ongoing condition can be reissued by your GP as needed.
If your condition requires ongoing specialist involvement, your GP can continue to coordinate your care and provide updated referrals at each annual review.
In some instances for chronic conditions, you can ask your GP about issuing an indefinite referral.
How do I get a referral online?
Book a telehealth consultation and discuss your symptoms or concerns with your GP.
If a referral is clinically warranted, your doctor will issue it electronically at the end of your consultation.

Our GPs are registered with AHPRA and practise in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia’s Good Medical Practice guidelines. Referrals are issued at the clinical discretion of the treating practitioner and are not guaranteed on request.
